Automated Medical Information Processing in ICU of the Future

Goals:

  • Earlier and more accurate diagnosis of complex syndromes
  • Reduced workload and improved performance for medical staff

We are working to go from current mental information processing, which is not broad enough, deep enough, or frequent enough, to automated information processing (using delirium as example):

  1. Manual assessment: Confusion Assessment Method in the Intensive Care Unit (CAM – ICU scores)
  2. Eye and limb tracking scores in response to stimulation
  3. Real-time monitoring of fluxes in inflammatory biomarkers associated with delirium
  4. Measurements of organ physiology and dysfunction
  5. Knowledge of medications that influence delirium
  6. Environmental variables (e.g., day/night orientation that may influence cognitive function and sleep enhancement)
