Engineering Next Generation Medical Systems

This new initiative spans across multiple departments at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, in collaboration with the University of Illinois at Chicago, as well as medical professionals from Carle Foundation Hospital.

The convergence of medicine and engineering is rapidly revolutionizing medical care. As a world leader in science and technology, Illinois must take the steps necessary to play a major role in this convergence. The University already has world-class leaders in robotic surgery, nano biosensors, decision and control, robust adaptive control, nano device design and fabrication, medical imaging, visualization, data mining and machine learning, statistical data analysis and causal factor identification, signal processing and communications, computing and networking, security, reliability and safety critical system integration architecture. We have conceptualized inter-disciplinary teams of core investigators with complementary expertise. The team ranges from pioneers in robotic surgery to pioneers in the engineering aspects of the project.
