Dear MCBees,
Congress is currently working to reconcile the two versions of tax reform legislation that were recently passed in the House of Representatives and the Senate. The final version could include a provision that would subject graduate tuition waivers to taxation as income. Passage of such legislation would make graduate education less affordable and would undoubtedly have negative consequences for current and future graduate enrollment.
This potential tax reform is understandably a topic of concern for all of us. We agree with the Graduate College that these provisions would have a considerably negative impact on graduate students at the University. The Graduate College has contacted all graduate students to highlight how the University is responding to the bill and to encourage us to contact our representatives. We write to you today to provide specific resources for you to make your voice heard. Please find below the contact information for our local and state legislators. You may also find an example e-mail here that you may adapt to your own needs, or use as a template when contacting your representatives.
Yours truly, |
