Reflection

For this research paper, I focused on revise three parts: thesis, expletive construction, and conclusion.

I realized that I need to edit my thesis when I prepare the poster for RHET conference. The main stressors I talked about in my paper are cultural beliefs, language difficulties, financial difficulties and relationship conflicts. However, the stressors in my original thesis were cultural beliefs, lifestyle differences, language difficulties and financial difficulties. This was a huge mistake, but I did not catch it when I edited my child draft. I should be more careful in the future.

Beside other minor grammar errors, expletive construction was a big problem in my original paper. I used a lot of “there is/are” and “it is” to begin my sentences. For revision, I fixed most of the unnecessary expletive constructions and made my sentences more concise.

In the original essay, I ended the paper by talking about there should be more interaction between student groups. However, it was not really a conclusion. In revision, I added a new paragraph to conclude. At the end, I stated the main purpose of my research is to bring up awareness of the issue and appeal people to work together to improve it.

One technique I found really helpful when I revise this essay was to read out loud. I caught expletive constructions when I read out loud. Expletive constructions are easier to be noticed because it sounds wordy and unnecessary.
