How to Survive (and Thrive!) in Professor Mary’s Class

Outline in presentational style: Prezi https://prezi.com/p/qhoc31-pfrag/

Generally, although I kept on track for most of the times, the misinterpretations of two of the three major assignments made me struggle several times in Prof. Mary’s class. When I was doing the reflection of my semester, I found that if there were a manual written by previous students telling me tips of surviving in this class, my performance would be significantly enhanced. In order to benefit following students, I summarized five advice:

  1. Attendance
  2. Keep on track!
  3. Contact with your instructor
  4. Understand the purposes
  5. Have fun

    1.Attend Every Class

Despite the fact that showing up in class is the responsibility for all students, attending class is extremely helpful. First of all, since there are points given on attendance, attending class can make sure that you won’t lose any point in that aspect. Moreover, Prof. Mary has really enthusiastic and nontraditional style of presentation, several analogies she made during her lectures, including the chair analogy and artwork analogy, impressively illustrated the ideas she wanted to convey ( I am not going to explicitly writing down what she managed to convey for not taking away your anticipation).

    2. Keep on track!

There are several assignments that extends from the very beginning of the semester to almost the final. Prof. Mary might gradually give out instructions of those homework. BEGIN WORKING ON THEM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! Although there is nothing wrong for you to check out the homework(or extra credit) at the end of the semester, you might be stressed out because of the overwhelming workloads. Actually, I wanted to do the extra credit 1 before the end of the semester. I opened the instruction of that extra credits during March, figured out it was a month before the due date of the extra credit, I put it aside until it was too late to attend the events.

Moreover, you should also keep on track on your weekly minor assignments. Based on the progress of the course, the due dates of the minor assignments, although most of them are on Wednesday, Friday, or Monday, are not perfectly regular. As a result, you should constantly check Compass 2g to keep on track of each of the minor assignments. I actually missed a homework during the first several weeks of the semester, after this bad experience, I began constantly checking the assignments for the rest of the semester.

    3. Contact your instructor

It is sincere to say that Prof. Mary is very warmhearted. If you have any comments or concerns about RHET 105, please don’t hesitate to contact her. Talking to her after class or asking for an office hour are both good options.

Actually, I couldn’t clearly understand all of the homework. When I encountered points of confusion, I chose to take a guess by myself. The grades of the first and the last paper told me that I was wrong. Asking for clarifications from the teacher is always better than guessing by yourself. In order to get on the right track for the last portfolio assignment, I have already asked for an individual meeting with Prof. Mary.

    4. Understand The Purpose

I had the idea of this piece of advice when I was doing my revising for the portfolio. I found that each of the major and minor elements of this course is assigned or practiced for the purpose of achieving a further goal. The obvious example is that the purpose of annotated bibliography is to prepare of the research paper. Moreover, figuring out some of the other purposes requires thinking in-depth; for example, as I indicated in my reflection of CR3 revision “(As I reread the instruction) I figured out (CR3) was actually asking for both the ability of analyzing a controversial event and the ability of correctly providing in-text citations and worked cited page in MLA format, (which is a preparation for the major assignment).” In order to be benefited substantially from the course, it is essential to understand that almost everything in RHET 105 is a step for a bigger achievement, and the purpose of Prof. Mary asking you to do each of the step is to make you reach the bigger achievements easier.
