
The Vice-Provost for Undergraduate Education and the Director of the Office of Online Learning led the search for pilot courses for Illinois’ first Dual Credit offerings. These courses are some of the University’s most popular 100-level courses, and each satisfies at least one general education requirement for undergraduates at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. ASTR 150
Killer-Skies: Astro Disasters w/ Professor Leslie Looney Exploration of the most dangerous topics in the Universe, such as meteors, supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, magnetars, rogue black holes, colliding galaxies, quasars, and the end of the Universe, to name just a few. Emphasis is placed on understanding the nature of each phenomenon, assessing the potential risk(s) to our civilization, and describing mitigation strategies.
SPED 117
The Culture of Disability w/ Professor Erica Mason The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to the culture of disability, particularly in its intersection with contemporary American history and educational services. The course will explore impacts of disabilities across the lifespan, along with the unique culture created by having diverse abilities. The historical basis for the disability movement and special education will be addressed, including legislation and litigation that has had a significant impact on the field.
MACS 100
Introduction to Popular TV & Movies w/ Senior Lecturer Jonathan Knipp The goal of this course is for students to begin to develop a critical understanding of the role of popular movies and television in their own lives and in U.S. culture. The course looks at issues of the relationship of media to social violence, gender identities, sexual identities, adolescents, minority cultures, and the role of the U.S. media globally. It also considers some of the major media genres that characterize U.S. popular television and movies.
ACES 102
Introduction to Sustainable Food Systems introduces students to the fundamentals of modern crop, livestock, and other agricultural production systems, and consider the future challenges and opportunities in producing enough for a growing world population. The course explores the development, production, preparation, consumption, and utilization of food, feed, fiber and energy, while managing the disposal and reuse of byproducts, within complex socioeconomic, ecological and environmental systems.
STAT-CS 107
Data Science Discovery w/ Professor Wade Fagen-Ulmschneider and Professor Karle Flanaganrn. Data Science Discovery is the intersection of statistics, computation, and real-world relevance. As a project-driven course, students perform hands-on-analysis of real-world datasets to analyze and discover the impact of the data. Throughout each experience, students reflect on the social issues surrounding data analysis such as privacy and design.
