IMPORTANT NOTICE: Team members interested in taking the MPRE during the upcoming academic year should be aware the March date option tends to fall close to, and sometimes even during, the national competition event. For this reason, team members should plan on taking the MPRE in August or November instead. - Teams must write a written memorandum “to file” based on a videotaped client statement.
- In the regional rounds, the memorandum round will be 1 of the 3 preliminary rounds.
- The memorandum will be scored by 3 attorney judges, similarly to the live client interview.
- The Subcommittee has also provided guidance on the use of legal research in the memorandum while maintaining team anonymity. Teams must now submit 3 documents: (1) the memorandum to file, which must not include any information that would reveal their home school or jurisdiction, (2) a research folder, which is a document that contains full citations to any legal materials the team references in their memorandum, and (3) a document certifying that the memorandum is solely the work of the team members.
The memorandum, research folder, and certification form must be submitted to the ABA Law Student Division together in one email to competitions@americanbar.org no later than 11:59 pm Central Standard Time (CST) on the date set in the Official Schedule. The subject line of the email should read: “Memorandum Submission for Region [Y], Team [X]”, where Y is the team’s assigned region and X is the team’s assigned letter. All three files (memorandum, research folder, and certification form) must be attached to this email. The Subcommittee may apply a penalty if the memorandum, research folder, or certification documents arrive after 11:59 pm CST on the scheduled due date, at the discretion of the Subcommittee.and X is the team’s assigned letter. Submission Procedure
2025 Rules
To advance to upper levels of competition, teams must advance from the current level of competition. A team consists of three JD candidates (and an alternate) attending the same ABA-approved law school. The regional competition consists of three qualifying rounds which include one memo-writing round and two rounds with each team competing indirectly against one or two other teams. The teams are presented with a different client matter in each round. After the qualifying rounds, the top six teams advance to the semifinal round, culminating with the three winning teams in the final round. There are typically twelve teams at a regional competition.
