Suyun Ham wins at Boise, Idaho QNDE Competition

Suyun Ham earned an impressive 2nd place win of the student research paper competition at the 2014 QNDE at Boise, Idaho.
Review of progress in Quantitative NDE, or “QNDE” is the premiere international NDE meeting designed to provide an interface between research and early engineering through the presentation of current idea and results focused on facilitating a rapid transfer to engineering development.
His poster was entitled “Air-coupled ultrasonic approach to detect reinforced concrete defects using Lamb waves.” A total of 43 students were recognized as finalists of this competition and 3 students were announced as winners.fig2

Hajin Choi chosen as winner of 2014 IEEE Student Paper Competition

Hajin Choi, a Ph.D. candidate, has been chosen as a winner of the student paper competition at the 2014 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium in Chicago. The award is from Group 2: Sensors, NDE and Industrial Application, and the title of paper is “Application of Air-coupled Ultrasound to Full Scale Concrete Columns Using Tomography“. A total of 18 students were recognized as finalists of this competition and 6 students were announced as  winners of each group during the banquet. Hajin_IEEE1

John S. Popovics chosen as winner of ASNT 2014 Faculty Grant

University of Illinois Associate Professor John Popovics has been chosen as a 2014 winner of the ASNT Faculty Grant.  The grant is used to fund the revision or development of the nondestructive testing curriculum in an engineering school accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology or its equivalent.  Also recognized as 2014 winners are Professor J. Ernesto Indacochea and Assistant Professor Didem Ozevin of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
