
The Illinois-Carle Joint Neural Engineering and Rehabilitation Laboratory (JNERL) is pleased to announce that Prof. Yuan Yang has received an American Heart Association (AHA) Bridge Career Development Award for the project Optimal targeted high-definition tDCS for reducing post-stroke upper limb motor impairments. This project builds on ongoing work to develop targeted neuromodulation approaches for improving upper limb recovery after stroke.
Motor impairments after stroke, especially in individuals with more severe upper limb deficits, remain a major challenge for rehabilitation. JNERL’s work in this area focuses on targeted high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS), a more precise brain stimulation approach designed to modulate specific cortical regions involved in post-stroke motor control. The project aims to improve recovery by reducing maladaptive motor pathway activity and enhancing the function of injured motor systems.
This award further supports JNERL’s broader research mission of combining neural engineering, brain imaging, and rehabilitation science to advance neurorehabilitation and brain health.
