We are delighted to share that Nhat Bui has been selected to receive the 2026 Beckman Institute Undergraduate Fellowship. This award recognizes his strong potential as a young researcher and will support his research experience at the Beckman Institute.
Nhat has been working in our lab since Spring 2025 under the mentorship of Rita Peng and with the support of Dr. Yuan Yang. His research focuses on the development of an explainable artificial intelligence framework that integrates resting-state time-series EEG and quantitative EEG features through a fusion model. This work is followed by analysis using a Shapley value-based explainer to quantify the contribution of each input feature to the model’s predictions. Through this project, Nhat has been contributing to ongoing efforts to address important challenges in neuroscience AI, including modeling, interpretability, and causality. By combining multimodal EEG information with explainable machine learning methods, his work aims to improve both the performance and transparency of AI-based approaches for brain research.
The Beckman Institute Undergraduate Fellowship will provide valuable support for Nhat’s continued research progress during the summer. We are excited to see this project move forward and look forward to future dissemination of the work.
We warmly congratulate Nhat on receiving this fellowship and thank Rita Peng and Dr. Yuan Yang for their mentorship and support. We are proud of Nhat’s accomplishments so far and look forward to seeing his continued growth and contributions in the lab.
