Partnering for Impact in East St. Louis
The Jackie Joyner-Kersee Food, Agriculture, Nutrition Innovation Center (JJK FAN) is a partnership between the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, and Lansdowne UP.
Together, we empower youth and families in East St. Louis and beyond through hands-on education, urban agriculture, physical activity, and youth development. We are also helping address food access in the community, providing fresh produce and opportunities to learn. By cultivating pathways for personal growth, professional development, and entrepreneurship, JJK FAN is sparking economic empowerment and strengthening communities across the region.
Research that Matters
ACES and Illinois Extension are partnering with JJK FAN to pilot new ideas in urban agriculture, robotics, soil health, and community economics—bringing innovation directly to East St. Louis.
Learning with Purpose
Through courses, internships, and fieldwork, ACES students and faculty gain hands-on experience at JJK FAN while supporting community-driven education and youth development.
Growing the Future
From a first-of-its-kind solar greenhouse to a new 24,000 ft² learning center, JJK FAN is building spaces that open fresh opportunities for research, education, and community impact.
