Tech Tip of the Week: Installing Printers and Using Papercut

Have you ever needed to print something and not known where to do it? Never fear! The iSchool has some printers that you can use!

Location:
We recommend the use of public printers Optimus, located conveniently right next to the Help Desk on the second floor, or Chip who resides next to room 12 on the first floor. To learn more about the public printers and where they live, check out this Wiki page. We will do a second Tech Tip in the future regarding printers to use in the new building once everything is set up there!

Printing Cost and Quota:
iSchool Masters and CAS students have $21 a semester for printing costs. You must be currently enrolled in an iSchool course to use this budget. School Faculty, Staff, and PhD students are not charged for printing, although it is tracked. Both black and white and color printing costs $0.07/page. Color printing is available on Optimus, located on the 2nd floor near the Help Desk. Check your printing balance on the Illinois Papercut page.  Unused printing quotas do not carry over. Additional printing quota can be purchased on the IlliniCash website.
Undergraduate iSchool students have access to printers across campus, including the ones in the iSchool. Undergraduate printing cost is $.10/page on monochrome printers and $.40/page on color printers. Color printers charge $.40/page even if monochrome documents are printed.

Printer Installation for your computer:
Though we do have self-service kiosks for both Chip and Optimus where you can log in and print from, there is also the option for you to download the printers on to your computer, so when you are in the building you will be able to print. Instructions for how to install the printers on Mac are here and PC here! Always feel free to drop by the Help Desk if you need assistance with installing printers or have any other questions!

Tech Tip of the Week: Hold for Authentication when Printing

Oftentimes the root of Mac printing issues relates to the keychain. An incorrect password might have been typed and saved or you may have changed your UIUC password and now your device is repeatedly trying to print with the wrong credentials. If this is the case when you print you will likely see “Hold for Authentication”.

To fix this you can go to Keychain Access then look for any credentials including printer names or ischoolprint and delete them. Then try printing again. Hopefully, at this point, it will pop up asking for credentials. You should enter your current netID and UIUC password, but do not save these credentials to the keychain to avoid this issue in the future.

This is a more common issue with Macs, but when it occurs on Windows machines the program is called Credential Manager as opposed to the Keychain Access program on Macs.

Tech Tip of the Week: Wifi

The TTW is short and sweet this week but this is good to keep in mind when you start the initial troubleshooting process.

Always double check that you are connected to Illinois Net wifi!

If printing from your laptop isn’t working or you suddenly stop having access to the webpages, your wifi connection may be to blame. Double check that your computer didn’t default to the guest account!

Tech Tip of the Week: Printing at the iSchool!

This week’s Tech Tip is all about printing!

Optimus the Printer
The only color printer in the building!

We have 6 public printers in the building, and two have kiosks that you can print from – Optimus on the second floor by the Help Desk and Chip in the basement by rooms 12A and 46. If you want to print from your own computer, check out these guides for Windows and Mac.

Each page costs 7 cents and iSchool students get $21 in printing credit. To check your balance and to see your previous print jobs you can visit papercut.ics.illinois.edu. If you run out of printing credit, you can use Illini Cash!

We also offer secure printing, where you are able to send a print job but not release it until you enter a PIN on the printer. Check out instructions to set that up here!
