Tech Tip: LibGuides

LibGuides is an easy-to-use Content Management System used by thousands of libraries worldwide. Librarians and instructors use it to curate knowledge and share information by creating online Guides on any topic, subject, course, on any process, on anything.

You can use LibGuides to create subject, course, or topic guides, use as your library website, store your A-Z lists for easy reuse, create internal guides documenting workflows & procedures, create and maintain staff profile pages, LibGuides is multilingual too, and mobile and tablet-friendly.

I personally like the How-To guides for library resources. If you’re library has a program or tool you’re interested in, you might search their website for a LibGuide on how to access and use said resource. You can learn more in springshare’s tutorial here.

Here’s the UIUC Library listing of Libguides: https://guides.library.illinois.edu/?b=t

Earth Day Resources

In celebration of Earth Day, we’d like to take this opportunity to link you to a few resources in and around the C-U area of Illinois. Below are just a few places and services which help us all reduce our impact on the environment. This is by no means a comprehensive list, and with a little thought, we’re sure you can think of many other ways to support the environment.

  • Recycle batteries, medication, hearing aids, ink toner cartridges, and more at the Urbana Free Library.

  • Donate to your old items to clothe and shoe bins around town. They’ll take things that store-fronts and non-profits might not. They do NOT have to be wearable, but they should be clean.
  • Many of the bins are sponsored by the GAIA movement, see more here: https://gaia-movement-usa.org/about-us/about-gaia-movement-usa

  • There are book bins around as well, sponsored by Discover Books. Better to donate than to throw away.
  • There are also little lending libraries around town to check out and the iSchool Help Desk’s own lending libraries near each desk location.
  • Learn more about Discover Books here: https://www.discoverbooks.com/

Where to take recycling in Urbana:

Look here for more details (there are lots of details): https://urbanaillinois.us/residents/recycling-program-u-cycle/where-do-i-take-it

Where to take recycling in Champaign

Look here for more details (there are a lot of details and places to take all kinds of materials): https://champaignil.gov/public-works/recycling/where-do-i-recycle-it/

There are all kinds of ways to get involved in keeping our collective home cleaner and healthier, from adopting a highway with friends, to planting a garden (pollinator and food gardens especially), biking, walking, or using public transport instead of driving, replacing inefficient electronics, and of course recycling when and where you can. The weather may not always be the best, but we encourage you to get outside to appreciate the natural world around you.

We’d also like to note what appears to be a lack of glass recycling in our area. Currently some curbside pick-up services in accept glass recyclables, but otherwise there does not seem to be any place which accepts glass items.

Tech Tip of the Week: UIUC AnyWare

UIUC AnyWare gives students and instructors access to a variety of software that can be accessed remotely. Even better, VPN is not required to use UIUC AnyWare.

UIUC AnyWare may be helpful to those who:

    • need to run software that they do not have access to on their own devices;
    • need to run software that their personal device cannot run due to processing power;
    • are unable to download large files due to internet bandwidth issues or data caps.

You can learn about available software by visiting the Technology Services UIUC AnyWare webpage.

Tech Tip of the Week: How to Reserve a Meeting Room

You can now reserve a meeting space at 614 E. Daniel St.! Simply email iSchool-rooms@illinois.edu with the date, time, and requested room number. Not sure which room to request? Visit iSchool Building Facilities page for a list of conference rooms, including room occupancy limits.

Tech Tip of the Week: Tech Services and Walk-In Appointment Scheduling

Tech Services at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign offers a variety of services for students, faculty, staff, and researchers. On their website here, you will find information on getting connected to campus wifi, accessing Adobe Suite services, Canvas resources, and much more.

For Fall 2021, Tech Services is allowing walk-in support by appointment only. To schedule an in-person appointment with Tech Services, you can fill out this form. Their hours for walk-in support are Monday – Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday -Sunday: 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and your building access status will be checked via the Safer Illinois app or Boarding Pass website.

You can also contact them via email at consult@illinois.edu and via phone at (217) 244-7000 for remote support.

Tech Tip of the Week: Data Analytics Workshops and Consulting

This week we are giving a shout-out to the Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning’s (CITL) workshops and consulting for data analytics.

CITL’s data analytics workshops cover how to use questionnaire design, statistical software, and qualitative programs and occur in evenings throughout the semester.

CITL’s data analytics consulting on survey construction and implementation and how to find and prepare data for analysis is available to all University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign students, staff, and faculty.

Tech Tip of the Week: Online Learning Resources from CITL

With most classes being entirely online, the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL) is an extremely valuable resource. Below, we are going to highlight some of the most prevalent resources and information CITL offers for this unique academic year.

Instructor Resources

Instructor Resources for transitioning to online Instruction

To help you develop an online class, CITL offers ‘Online Course in a Box’

CITL also has information for instructors specifically about using Zoom, including potential uses and best practices

While not created by CITL, they do recommend this article on the basics of online teaching

CITL also recommends the Tukam if you are interested in hand-writing notes during lectures, as opposed to using slides. You can learn more about Tukam here.

Tech Tip of the Week: Cisco AnyConnect VPN

In order to access some resources from off-campus, you may need to use a VPN. Cisco AnyConnect VPN is the VPN provided by the University and is free to use for students, faculty, and staff.

You can find instructions on how to download and set up the VPN based on your type of device here.

For library resources, the VPN must be set to “Tunnel All” (see VPN for accessing library materials for more information).

You can find answers to some of the Frequently Asked Questions here. However, do not hesitate to reach out to the Help Desk if you have any questions!

Important Note!
Individuals who are only using the VPN to avoid entering their NetID/PW should disconnect the VPN.
This helps alleviate stress on the server and frees up room for those who must use the VPN as the only way of accessing resources.

Tech Tip of the Week: Loanable Technology from the Library

Did you know that you can borrow equipment from the University Library as well as books?

Both the Grainger IDEA Lab and the Media Commons have loanable technologies, including game consoles and virtual reality headsets.

You can find the list of loanable technologies here.

Tech Tip of The Week: Campus Wellness Resources

The University of Illinois’ Human Resources department offers Campus Wellbeing Services at this link. These services include wellness programs, an online hub and events calendar, online resources, and referrals to services on campus and in the community.

To address our current situation, they have also created a Coping with Covid-19 Toolkit at this link.
