Is 3D printed food the future?

This week I read an article by Heidi Ledford and Nature magazine in the Scientific American. 3D printed food seems to becoming more of a reality in two big ways! First, the professionals are getting on board: This week a small group of chefs and technophiles gathered in the Netherlands for the first conference dedicated to 3D printed food. Secondly, the Barcelona based company Natural Machines is soon to offer Foodini, a 3D food printer suitable for in home use.  Scientific American writes:

“There is a big debate in the 3D-printing world: will one day everybody have a 3D printer at home? Is it like a personal computer?” says Hod Lipson, an engineer at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. “I think the answer is yes, but it’s not going to print plastic. It’s going to be a food printer.”

I certainly look forward to having 3D printed chocolate in my kitchen.
