Grading Policy
- The highest possible grade is an “A.”
- One letter grade will be cut for each unexcused absence from rehearsal.
- Absences from concerts and dress rehearsals are not excusable and will result in an “F.”
Excused Absences: Students wishing to request an excused absence must contact the Music Director before the rehearsal in question. Orchestra members must play in (not just attend) at least 50% of the rehearsals in order to be eligible to play in the concert. Absences will be approved in the following circumstances:
- illness/injury (medical note required)
- religious obligations
- funerals or weddings within the immediate family
- job interviews or auditions (not paying jobs, or “gigs”)
- required educational activities for major and/or minor field(s) of study
- exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the Music Director.
Evening Exams: Per Article 3, Part 2, Section 3-202(e)(2) and (3) of the University of Illinois Student Code, evening exams are not considered excused absences from rehearsals or performances. Travel: The purchase of nonrefundable airline tickets or the making of travel plans do not excuse orchestra members from their obligations. Students with circumstances that involve difficult travel time from another part of campus should notify the Music Director.
Make-ups for Unexcused Absences: At the discretion of the Music Director, students may avoid the unexcused absence penalty by attending a coaching session on the music covered at the missed rehearsal. Students are responsible for requesting make-ups, and approval is not guaranteed.
Learner Accommodations: Any student with a documented learning disability should contact the Music Director so that an appropriate response may be devised.

Concert Attire:
Ladies: Colored top with any combination of floor length black bottoms.
Gentlemen: Colored dress shirt under black jacket. (No tie.) Black pants, shoes, and socks.
