Insurgent Architecture and Design in Latin America

Our research investigates insurgent projects in Latin America. Professor Brakke and his team have been documenting cases where the collective making of architecture, urban artifacts, and landscape architecture projects has served as a catalyst to improve the built environment and foster new forms of citizen engagement. These projects are often realized as grassroots initiatives in the informally settled areas where communities have collaborated with “colectivos” to design, develop and construct public interventions. We have been interviewing stakeholders and gathering data to better understand how these projects are being developed and the impact that this work has brought forth.
