Undergraduate Minor

Overview
The Undergraduate Minor in Hip Hop Culture and the Arts is an interdisciplinary program housed in the College of Fine Applied Arts. Students completing this program will explore fundamental content in Hip Hop history, generate original creative work, engage with critical cultural considerations, develop introductory skills with relevant digital media, and participate in youth programming in the Champaign-Urbana community.

Requirements
The Minor is open to all undergraduate students, with no prerequisite requirements. The student is responsible for notifying their college of the desire to pursue the minor by completing and appropriately filing the Statement of Intent to Pursue a Campus-Approved Minor.
The undergraduate minor in Hip Hop Culture & The Arts requires 16 credit hours. There are two required core courses (AFRO 228 – Hip Hop Music: History and Culture and FAA 481 – Hip Hop Ambassadors) and additional course options in the categories of Creative Studies, Cultural Studies, and Digital Media Studies. Degree requirements and other details are listed in the Course Catalog.
Of the 16 credits for this minor, a minimum of 6 credits must be advanced courses at the 300- or 400-level that are distinct from credits earned for a student’s major or another minor.

All students will need to complete Protection of Minors training and a criminal background check to work with minors during the semester. Some field experience locations may have additional requirements for participation.
