UP 494: Health and Place: A Planning Workshop –  Spring 2016

Course Instructor: Associate Professor Mary Edwards, Ph.D.

Research Assistants: Rachael Wilson and Emily Weimer

Students in UP494: Health and Place: A Planning Workshop, actively engaged with residents and decision-makers in the city of Peoria to develop a Neighborhood Wellness Plan.  Students facilitated a neighborhood asset mapping exercise to better understand residents’ perceptions of healthy and unhealthy places in the East Bluff neighborhood.  They also developed and implemented a neighborhood survey to elicit resident ideas for creating a healthier neighborhood.  These engagement activities coincided with their assessment of the built environment, compiled by walking the streets and parks of the neighborhood.  The East Bluff Neighborhood Wellness Plan includes strategies and recommendations to create a more walkable and bike-friendly neighborhood, along with ideas for healthier food options, increased social capital and crime prevention.

Students: Allie Goldstein, Cristen Hardin, Natalie Hoke, Taryn Harm, Nathan Lipson, Anna Ma, Oksana Polhuy, Jeremy Shackett, Jaylan Williams and Michael Zearing.
