Investigating children’s environmental health

The Healthy Early Life Environments (HELE) Lab at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is led by Dr. Sheena Martenies (Assistant Professor, Department of Health and Kinesiology). We are interested in investigating the roles that environmental factors play in the health of infants and children. To learn more about who we are, please see our profiles below. Descriptions of our current research projects are available here. Find a list of our most recent publications here.

Principal Investigator

Dr. Sheena Martenies

Dr. Martenies is an assistant professor in the department of Health and Kinesiology. Dr. Martenies’ research explores the ways in which environmental exposures, including air pollutants, features of the built environment, and others independently and jointly influence childhood health outcomes. Her work emphasizes the interactions between environmental and social determinants of health. She is interested in a number of critical environments in which children spend their time, including homes, schools, and childcare spaces. She earned an MPH in Environmental Health Science and Policy from the George Washington University in 2014 and a PhD in Environmental Health Sciences from the University of Michigan in 2017.

Elijah Davis

Elijah Davis joined the lab in Spring 2025. He is pursuing a Master of Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in Epidemiology. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Integrative Biology and has previous experience in evolutionary and chemical ecology research. His current research examines the climate vulnerability of family child care homes, with a focus on rural-urban disparities. Upon graduation, Elijah hopes to work at a state or federal-level public health organization, improving the health of vulnerable populations.

Tanya Karwande

Tanya Karwande joined the lab in 2021. She is pursuing a Master of Public Health with a concentration in Health Behavior and Promotion. She has a Bachelor’s of Science in Community Health. Her areas of interest include environmental health, health advocacy, health equity and health communication. Tanya is interested in a public health career working on community specific campaigns that target health disparities among underserved populations.

Undergraduate Students

Lilly Dinkov

Lilly Dinkov joined the lab in 2025. She is an undergraduate student majoring in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences (Health Technology) and minoring in Spanish. Lilly is interest in building her research experience as a member of the lab. She plans to attend pharmacy school and work in research within the pharmaceutical industry.
