How to Register

Here is the information you need to apply for an internship!

First, interested students should attend ONE of the following mandatory information meetings. Priority for applications and placements will be given to those attending the meeting.

Once you have reviewed the information from the meeting, determine whether you’d like to continue the application process and complete the information below. (*updated links will be provided after 02/22/2024)

After the Information Meeting:

Fill out a online application form and draft a resume and cover letter (to your first choice placement site) and email it to Dr. Elissa Mitchell (thomann2@illinois.edu) no later than Friday, March 15, 2024 (but sooner is always better!). *Please note that students who will be seniors and who have met the application deadline will be given priority for enrollment.

IF YOU ARE ACCEPTED, you will be asked to set up an interview appointment to meet with the Dr. Mitchell between Monday, March 4 and Friday, March 22, 2024. Click on the link below to schedule a meeting:

Interview

Be prepared to discuss your personal and academic background, career interests, and three possible internship sites from the catalog.

Interview with Site

Once you are approved by Dr. Mitchell, contact agency/supervisor (with cover letter and resume) to apply. Complete your interview with the agency by April 12, 2024. Take a copy of the HDFS 450 Placement Form with you, in case they agree to the placement during the interview.

Once the Placement Form is complete, including a signature of the supervisor, submit to Dr. Mitchell, and schedule a follow-up meeting to get approval for the course before April 19, 2024. Please note that some agencies may have slightly different dates/deadlines and you must follow their processes as well.

2024 Timeline & Deadlines

Please note that the dates below reflect final deadlines, but students are encouraged to complete task before the deadlines.

February 13 or 21 – Attend mandatory informational meeting Note: if you did not attend either of these meetings, you can email Dr. Mitchell, but you will likely need to wait until other students have started the placement process; if there are additional placements available, Dr. Mitchell will contact you to arrange a meeting.

March 1 – Deadline for priority placements (submit the online application, resume, & cover letter)

March 17 – Final deadline for placements (submit the online application, resume, & cover letter)

March 4 – March 29 – Interview with instructor (if approved)

March 4 – April 5 – Apply to agency

April 12 – Final deadline to interview with agency

April 19 – Deadline for approval meeting with instructor

April 26 – Complete registration
