Judging event results

The judging event for the first iteration of HackCulture was held on October 22nd, 2016. Student teams presented their final projects, which were all incredible. Below is information about the first and second place teams. Projects will be archived through the University Library’s repository system, IDEALS.

First Place: CU Fit

Team members: Anirudh Chandrashekar, Nicole Magerko, Samantha Yadron, Grace Wehner.

CU Fit utilizes nutritional data from local restaurants and grocery stores to enable users to find healthy options within their price range. Below are screen shots from their project.

Second Place: Talk2Data

Team Members: Emily Chen, Mark McCarthy, Hui Lyu, Daniel George

Talk2Data aims to bridge the gap between humanities and computer science, allowing anyone with zero programming experience to immediately start doing data science.

Check in-event and location change for judging

Hope you’re projects are going well! We’ll be having the check-in event tomorrow evening  – Wednesday the 12th – in room 106 of the Main Library from 4-7pm. Your mentors will be there to help and provide feedback, and it will also be a good opportunity to do some user testing if applicable.

I also wanted to note that I’ve changed the location for the judging event from the Union (where we had the kickoff event) to GSLIS 126. It is the Information Sciences building at 501 E. Daniel St. We’ll have much more room and a better setup for presentations, as well as fewer chairs to stumble over.

See you soon!

HackCulture Data Portal

Welcome to HackCulture 2016!

We’ve created a data collections and resources wiki to help you find relevant data for your Hackathon projects. You are not limited to these sources, but they are a good place to start. You might be surprised by the variety of open data related to the Champaign-Urbana community.

By now you should all have been given permission to access the wiki. Please speak to an event staff member if you cannot access the wiki.

Happy hacking!
