Two hydrogen (deuterium) gas manifolds (Sieverts apparatuses) are available to load metals and alloys with hydrogen or deuterium from the gas phase. These systems are UHV and include furnaces (1100 C max temperature) and absolute pressure measurement capacitance manometers (0.01 to 1000 Torr). The solute concentration is given by measuring the pressure drop during absorption and applying the ideal gas law for a known volume. The H Lab routinely prepare samples for hydrogen phase behavior, defect trapping, and diffusion measurements using neutron and X-ray scattering techniques.
