Word of the Week

We’ve taken a hiatus on “Words of the Week” (which actually tend to be phrases or acronyms or concepts), but why not start it up again for summer?

cloud computing

Cloud computing:

  • has resources and information that are made available on-demand
  • relies on sharing resources by networking large groups of servers to spread the work between them
  • the provider and not the local server or personal device handles applications: hosted services are delivered over the internet and do not require additional software installation on the user’s computer
  • there are three different models: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)

Some examples of cloud computing services include:
Amazon Web Services
Windows Azure Platform
Nimbus

Finally, this video from the Web 2.0 Expo features a variety of individuals from Tim O’Reilly to Maggie Fox attempting to describe cloud computing.
