Website of the Week: on Women in Open Source

This week’s Website of the Week is a transcript of Kirrily Robert’s keynote at OSCON. Some slides, along with a link to the entire slide set and a video, are included.

“Standing Out in the Crowd” is a talk on women working in open source. Robert discusses the overall demographics of open source, and two projects that have a majority of women developers: the Organization for Transformative Works’ Archive of Our Own (an archive for fan works, primarily fan fiction), and Dreamwidth (a blogging platform that’s a fork of the Livejournal codebase). She then discusses some tips for recruiting and supporting women in open source, many of which may be applicable to supporting diversity in a variety of projects.
