National Taiwan University is the flagship public research university in Taiwan, founded in 1928, during the Japanese occupation of the island, as the Taihoku Imperial University. After the close of World War II, the institution was re-organized and re-named National Taiwan University in 1945. Today, NTU has just over 2,000 full-time faculty and just over 33,000 students in 11 colleges, 54 departments, 107 graduate institutes, and eight master’s and PhD programs, which range from the natural sciences to the humanities, society, and the arts. The NTU faculty is ranked among the top 1% in the world by number of highly cited papers in 19 out of 22 areas of the ESI (Essential Science Indicators ) database.
