Baser and Attalla to receive SSC funding for “Alternative Energy Innovation at the Hydrosystems Laboratory”

Dr. Tugce Baser at CEE and executive director of Facilities and Services Dr. Muhamed Attalla to receive a funding with an amount of $120,000 from Student Sustainability Committee at University of Illinois to install energy piles at the Ven Te Chow Hydrosystems Lab. The team has been working together from design stage to execution which is tentatively scheduled for May 2nd, 2019. We thank to our sponsors to make this project happen!

Baser receives Lemann Institute Collaborative Research Grant

The project titled “Thermal Response of a Large-Diameter Geothermal Energy Pile in Lateritic Soils” is recently funded by Lemann Institute Collaborative Research Grant. The PI Tugce Baser at UofI and co-PI Cristina de Hollanda Cavalcanti Tsuha at University of São Paulo will perform field tests at the São Carlos campus to develop reliable methods to characterize thermal processes at the lateritic soil-pile interface. The project is tentatively scheduled to start in August 2019. We thank to our sponsor for funding this research.

Baser received grant to investigate glacial tills for planned Geothermal System on campus

In February 2019, iSEE funded a project led by Tugce Baser, Roman Makhnenko, and Andrew Stumpf, to investigate the effect of temperature on hydraulic conductivity of glacial tills deposited during different glacier drifts. Glacial till core samples were collected from the borehole west of the geothermal exchange field on the Bardeen Quad. The team will perform tests on glacial tills to characterize coupled constitutive relationships of thermal and hydraulic properties. Results from this study will help to better understand thermal behavior of shallow geothermal systems in cold regions while providing an efficient design framework for future installations.
