Self-similar, fractal structures are rather ubiquitous in nature. From veins on a leaf to the structure of human lungs, branching structures are often self-repeating and show the same patterns at all level of magnification. Such is the case with the four major rivers in the Champaign County area (Sangamon, Kaskaskia, Embarras and Vermillion River) depicted in this piece. The images were created in ArcGIS using LiDAR imagery.
