Project Description: Ethylene oxide (EO) is a compound that is used extensively in ethylene glycol production, as well as in the petroleum industry and pharmaceuticals. EO production is industrially catalyzed using supported silver catalysts. Promoters such as Cs, Cl and Re are known to improve the performance of these catalysts. Our objective is to understand the molecular basis upon which these promoters improve the selectivity towards EO production. We use a combination of Raman spectroscopy and kinetic studies to understand the nature of the active surface oxygen intermediates that favor EO production.
