Project Description: Conversion of the biomass-derived feedstock chemicals of ethanol and ethanal to upgraded products is one challenge in the goal of biomass-derived energy and chemicals. To overcome this challenge we find the design rules based on the principle of volume confinement for zeolite catalysts to selectively convert the dimers to trimers and tetramers. We characterize zeolite catalysts synthesized in our lab in two ways. One, in terms of material properties (crystallinity, grain size, particle size, bulk composition, surface composition) using a suite of in house and central facilities spectroscopies (IR, UV-VIS, EXAFS, XRD, Raman).
