About Me

My long-term passion in research is to achieve comprehensive solutions to biomedical challenges via fundamentally engineering biomaterials/ nanomaterials demonstrating enormous potential for mimicking the in vivo conditions. I grew up in Iran and did my BSc and MSc at Sharif University of Technology. During my early stages of BSc I became fascinated by how my tool kit of materials can change the face of the world of medicine. My initial exposure to biomaterials was in my MSc thesis where I developed electrospun nanofibers for tissue engineering purposes.

I am currently a Cardiovascular Imaging T32 postdoctoral fellow mentored by Prof. Joseph C. Wu (M.D., Ph.D. National Academy of Medicine) at Stanford University.  I successfully defended my PhD thesis in Feb 2019 and was an interim Beckman Institute postdoctoral fellow for 6 month. In Fall 2014, I had the privilege of joining Prof. Dipanjan Pan (Ph.D., FRSC, FAHA) for my PhD studies as an AHA (American Heart Association) fellow. Prof. Pan is a global leader and has  a track record in the invention of new nanotechnology platforms for various biomedical applications including molecular imaging with MRI, CT, optical, Raman and photoacoustics imaging.  There, I strengthened my expertise in nanoparticles research and had the opportunity to design and engineer nanoparticle systems for drug delivery applications, imaging purposes and bacterial infection prevention. I am adept at the nanomaterials synthesis, physicochemical characterizations, and conducting in vitro studies on several prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells’ models with 6+ years hands-on experience tied with my interdisciplinary background in materials science and engineering and bioengineering.

In addition to research, I am highly motivated to get involved in mentoring and teaching activities. I have participated as a mentor in programs such as URAP (Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program) here at UIUC and am looking forward of gaining more experience as an ISUR (Illinois Scholars Undergraduate Research) mentor this coming fall. In the long run, I would like to pick up a career in academia and therefore, I am highly committed to research and teaching opportunities whenever they come along.
