Ways in which practicing mindfulness can help one cope with anxiety

Taking the time out of your day to be more reflective of your surroundings and current feelings may seem daunting at first. In our day and age, we are constantly in motion to seek the next conversation, the next meal, social event, fashion trend, or funny video coming up on social media. We’re being bombarded with advertisements from the media and notifications from our phones that fill up the awareness of our minds. Achieving a state of total mental clarity and mindfulness is quite difficult to jump into if someone just begins to practice it. The idea behind it is that your spirit is in tune with your body and vividly feeling the sensations that your skin, eyes, ears, and other parts are taking in. By putting in the effort to become more mindful of our surroundings, we can more easily deal with anxiety in our lives. As a student myself, taking the time every morning to quiet my mind and meditate on my senses has vastly improved my mental, emotional, and physical well-being as I navigate the stresses of college.

Ways to practice mindfulness

The first method to cope with any stress or anxiety that you may be experiencing is something called awareness meditation. To begin, make sure to sit somewhere comfortable away from any loud distractions or people that could be near you. Then, switch your focus on your breath and let your tension melt away with every inhale and exhale. If you feel that it’s hard to not think about other things while you are doing, try your best to switch your attention back to the raw motions of your body while it is breathing. As you do this, and find it easier to breathe without distraction, you may then think about your current emotions from neutral standpoint. Don’t stress yourself in feeling that you have to feel a certain way in that moment, simply take in your emotions as they pass by. Observing our feelings from a more welcoming point of view will be extremely beneficial towards defining where your stresses are stemming from in your life. Knowing those origins will then assist you with brainstorming ways of changing your current lifestyle to overcome them. Most importantly, after several sessions of focusing on these stresses, you will hopefully find that you’re more confident and stronger than the problems and discomfort that they are causing you in the present.

A second method that is recommended to deal with anxiety is holistic therapy. The idea behind this kind of therapy is that it is usually provided by a rehabilitation expert who shifts their attention to their client’s overall well-being as a whole. While many rehab programs incorporate the use of medications to decrease a person’s stress levels and improve their mental and physical state, it instead takes into account ways to improve your emotional and spiritual state as a human being overall. Whether through nutritional improvement, exercise rehabilitation, massage and aromatherapy, or arts and music therapy, it understands that the mind, spirit, and body are thickly interwoven. The substances that a person consumes and things they do daily eventually shape how healthy they are mentally. If a client is willing to follow their specialist’s recommendations, they could very well see benefits like being less addicted to substances like caffeine or alcohol, decreased anxiety, and a more mellow state of mind throughout the day.

To round out those methods, participating in physical activities like sports can also be very helpful to decrease stress and increase your mind’s connection to your body. From running to playing competitive soccer or hockey with a local team or club, you’ll quickly find that you have to be aware of your surroundings and communicate with your body to choose the next best move. Intense activity like that also releases healthy endorphins that are proven to improve your mood levels and provide a more stable state of mind.

The significance of mindfulness

More often than not, many people turn to the numbing of the media, medication, or other addictive outlets to hopefully escape their stress and enter a more “rose colored” reality. On the flip side, no matter what age you are, your gender, socio economic status, or ethnic background, turning to the practice of mindfulness will make a positive impact on your everyday life. It may seem difficult at first to break away from the habits that you rely on already, but finding that you have the inner strength to overcome what is being unhealthy for your body will be extremely important.
