Mental Health First Aid for the Ag Community

Adult Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches participants how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adults. Participants build skills to provide initial support to those who are struggling.

Participants Learn:

  • Common signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges
  • How to interact with a person in crisis
  • How to connect a person with help
  • Self-care tools and techniques

Youth Mental Health First Aid

Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches participants how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adolescents ages 12-18. Participants build skills to provide initial support to young people who are struggling.

Participants Learn:

  • Common signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges
  • How to interact with a young person in crisis
  • How to connect a young person with help
  • About trauma, substance use, self-care and the impact of social media and bullying

Communicating with Farmers Under Stress

A workshop for agricultural community members to learn the stressors in agriculture, warning signs of suicide, and how to help a producer experiencing distress.

Participants Learn:

  • How to build awareness around potentially stressful conditions affecting some farmers
  • Stress triggers, identifying signs of stress and review helpful techniques for responding
  • Techniques for identifying, approaching and working with farmers who may not cope with stress effectively
  • Where to go for additional help

Weathering the Storm

Weathering the Storm is a workshop for agricultural producers that helps you identify and manage stressors in life and resources that can help when feeling distressed. Chronic stress can take a huge toll on your health. Learn to identify common stressors, recognize symptoms, and access practical management tools and techniques to reduce the effects of unwanted stress.

Participants Learn:

  • Stress signs and symptoms
  • Three everyday strategies for managing stress
  • Where to go for more help and resources
  • How to make an action plan for managing stress
