Last week the Structural Stability Research Council celebrated its 75th anniversary at the Annual Stability Conference, held in conjunction with the AISC North American Steel Construction Conference (NASCC).  SSRC was founded in 1944 as the Column Research Council and became SSRC in 1976.  Since its inception, the Council has served as an international forum for the exchange of ideas and ongoing research efforts related to the stability of structural components and systems.  SSRC’s service to the structural engineering profession includes support of education and code development, and publication of the Guide to Stability Design Criteria for Metal Structures.

At the Annual Stability Conference, held last week in St. Louis, Kelley Grabner presented a paper, based on her thesis (MS, 2018), titled “Seismic Stability of Special Concentrically Braced Frames in a Moderate Seismic Region.”  Congratulations to Kelley on this accomplishment!  Also at the Conference, Larry Fahnestock moved from Vice-Chair to Chair of SSRC and Dan Linzell (U. of Nebraska) was appointed Vice-Chair.  Thanks to Past-Chair Todd Helwig (UT Austin) for his excellent service to SSRC!

In the closing keynote of NASCC, former SSRC Chair (and editor of the SSRC Guide) Ron Ziemian (Bucknell U.) delivered his inaugural T.R Higgins Lecture, “Structural Stability – Letting the Fundamentals Guide Your Judgement.”  Congratulations to Ron on this significant honor!
