Virnaliz Jimenez, M.S.
I’m Virnaliz, a PhD student in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I am interested in understanding how young people feel stress and how it affects their minds and bodies. I study how parents’ advice can help their children handle stress. I am also interested in how culture and community can be used to help young people grow up strong and healthy.

Lisa M. Guntzviller, Ph.D.
Hi! I’m Lisa, an associate professor of communication at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I am interested in helping families who don’t speak English well but live in the United States. I am especially interested in how mothers and adolescents work together to overcome language difficulties. I also work with doctors and often help doctors understand how to work with patients who are from other cultures and are not fluent in English.

Kelly M. Tu, Ph.D.
I’m Kelly, an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I am interested in understanding teens’ stress experiences (problems with peers, academic challenges) and their well-being. I study how teens react to stress, their sleep behaviors, and the role of family, such as parents’ support. My goal is to learn more to help support teens and families health and well-being.

Sandraluz Lara-Cinisomo, Ph.D.
I’m Sandraluz. I focus on understanding and addressing mental health disparities in women and mothers, especially among racial and ethnic minorities, immigrants, and military populations. My research looks at how psychosocial, cultural, structural, and physiological factors contribute to mental health issues. I examine how things like culture and biology are linked to poor mental health in these groups. Recently, I’ve completed studies on how hormone function (like cortisol and oxytocin) relates to perinatal depression in Latinas.
Soy Sandraluz. Me enfoco en entender y abordar las disparidades en la salud mental de mujeres y madres, especialmente entre minorías raciales y étnicas, inmigrantes y poblaciones militares. Mi investigación analiza cómo los factores psicosociales, culturales, estructurales y fisiológicos contribuyen a los problemas de salud mental. Examino cómo cosas como la cultura y la biología están relacionadas con la mala salud mental en estos grupos. Recientemente, he completado estudios sobre cómo la función hormonal (como el cortisol y la oxitocina) se relaciona con la depresión perinatal en mujeres latinas.
