ESC’s Admitted Student Night:
ESC is holding an Admitted Student Night on Tuesday, April 20th at 7-8 pm (our normal meeting time). Help us welcome admitted English/CW students to English at Illinois!
We want to provide an immersive experience for incoming freshmen/transfer students despite the limitations of the Covid-19 pandemic. This zoom event is intended to give prospective students a taste of what English Student Council membership is as well as all the great things about being an English/CW student at UIUC!

Social Media Management Internship, Department of English (2021-2022):
For the 21-22 academic year, the Department of English is looking to hire three Social Media Management Interns: one Creative Writing major and two from any major in the English Department. In response to COVID safety precautions, this position is eligible for remote work.
Position Responsibilities:
- Develop creative thematic post series for Facebook and Instagram
- Promote, attend, and create social media posts about department events when safety allows
- Design flyers, memes, and other posts for informing and entertaining students
- Develop creative semester-long multimodal projects
- Attend weekly meetings for brainstorming, task assignments, and collaboration
- Edit videos and design flyers or posts
- Conduct and publish interviews with faculty, alumni, students, and visiting speakers
- Collaborate with Advising Office in creating content for the Advising Blog
Average hours worked per week: 5 (about 75 hours over a semester)
Position Wage: $11/hour

Summer Internship Opportunity at the Career Center:
Description:
The Career Center (TCC) is seeking two (2) energetic and customer oriented undergraduate summer interns. The internship focuses on working alongside TCC staff in designing and creating best outreach methods for current students, incoming students, and parents. The interns will have the ability to work on both small and large projects as well as receive ongoing personalized, professional development help from TCC staff. These positions require strong organizational skills and the ability to work in an environment that can be collaborative, as well as independent at times.
Type of Position:
Summer Internship: May 17 – August 6, 2021
Approximately 15 hours weekly, Monday – Friday during regular business hours. Precise schedule of these hours arranged upon hire.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Teamwork & Collaboration
- Interns will work in partnership to complete tasks assigned by The Career Center staff
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
- Design and develop innovative methods to reach students
- Assist students by providing one-on-one resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile reviews, virtually and face to face
- Assist students by providing drop-in advising on career-related topics such as major exploration and job/internship searches
Work Ethic
- Present The Career Center’s services and resources to incoming students and parents
- Meet regularly with supervising Assistant Director of Academic & Campus Outreach
Written & Oral Communication
- Provide customer service to visitors of The Career Center as the primary point of contact through telephone, email, and face to face interactions
- Facilitate presentations focusing on various career development topics, as requested by the campus community
Technology
- Utilization of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Illinois Media Space, Learn@Illinois Moodle, as well as Google web-based software
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled undergraduate student
- Must be able to dedicate 15 hours per week during regular business hours Monday-Friday, with the possibility of occasional weekend commitments
- Must be in good academic standing and uphold university student code of conduct
- Must be able to work a mixed schedule of remote and in-person, in accordance with The Career Center service delivery at the time
- This position may be funded through federal work-study program, which is a type of financial aid. The successful candidate is expected to complete a 2021-2022 FAFSA application, if eligible, which may be accessed at fafsa.ed.gov to determine eligibility for the federal work study program.
Compensation:
$11.00 hourly

Art-Science Festival @ Illinois: The Illuminated Universe:
Coming up on the weekend of April 23 – 25: the Art-Science Festival @ Illinois: The Illuminated Universe . Faculty member Amy Hassinger will join musician Joy Yang in a collaborative literary / musical presentation called “To See Clearly,” which combines spoken and sung excerpts from Amy’s essay of the same name with Joy’s lovely and haunting piano and theremin accompaniment–improvised music growing out of the essay and of Johnny Nash’s famous song “I Can See Clearly Now.” You are invited to attend the event.
“To See Clearly” will air on Friday night, April 23, at 6 p.m. central—you can find it under the Cosmic Flights theme on the website. But you might want to also check out all the other amazing contributions over the course of the weekend, including a presentation by physicist and jazz saxophonist Stephon Alexander, author of The Jazz of Physics, music by the Jupiter String Quartet, and the premiere of “Solaria: A science-based fantasy on the spirit of the solar system,” by Smitha Vishveshwara, Stephen A. Taylor, Rebecca Witfong, and Nic Morse.
