Join Odyssey at UIUC:

Odyssey at UIUC is actively recruiting new members! Odyssey is a content creation platform in which creators can write about whatever they want. The team only requires 2 short articles per month, and there is one social, optional meeting as well! Additionally, creators can work with professional editors and build their resumes. Virtual Illinois Abroad Week:

The study abroad units across campus are hosting Virtual Illinois Abroad Week from Monday, October 19 – Friday, October 23. This event is for all students, especially first years and sophomores, who might be interested in pursuing both immediate virtual study abroad experiences and future in-person international opportunities. Weekly Round-Up

Wallace Stevens Prize Competition:

The English Department has announced this year’s Wallace Stevens Prize for best essay on modern American or British poetry (1900-1939) by an undergraduate English department major or minor. The best critical essay will receive an award of $500. Entries are due November 5, 2020.  For more information, see the flyer.

Guidelines for Submission:

  • Length/Word limit: strict 5,000 words maximum for undergraduate entries
  • All entries must be submitted as wither .docx or .pdf files
  • Entries must be double-spaced with 12-point font
  • MLA style should be used
  • Eligibility: any student enrolled in an English department major or minor at Illinois during the previous 12 months before the submission deadline
  • One essay per entrant per year; previous winners are not eligible

Confidential Advisor Services:

Confidential Advisor services has now been expanded to offer both phone and virtual support beginning Monday, October 5th. The Women’s Resources Center (WRC) is the designated campus confidential advising resource for issues of sexual assault/rape, sexual harassment, sexual exploitation, stalking and abuse within a relationship. Students, faculty, and staff survivors of all gender identities are welcome and able to receive advocacy and support services at the WRC. Siebel Center for Design is currently hiring two part-time student positions (open to both undergraduate and graduate students). CMN 199: Business Comm Topics & Tactics:

If you are in need of a 2nd 8-week course, CMN 199 might be a good option for you. It’s a hybrid 1 hour course (Mon/Wed 3:30-4:50 PM, 1027 Lincoln Hall + asynchronous online). Submit to the AWP Intro Journals Project (Fiction, Poetry, Creative Nonfiction):

The Intro Journals Project is a literary competition for the discovery and publication of the best new works by students currently enrolled in AWP member programs. The Creative Writing faculty of the English department at the UIUC can nominate one story, one essay, and three poems to this national award.

If you are currently a CW major or a CW minor or an MFA candidate and would like to be considered for nomination, send one short story (max. 25 pages), one essay (max. 25 pages), or up to three poems via email attachment to John Dudek at jdudek4@illinois.edu by 12:00 noon, Monday, November 2, 2020.

Submission Instructions

Please include in the body of your email your name and academic year (junior, senior, MFA candidate, etc.) as well as your permanent address. Attach your submission as a .pdf, .doc, or .docx file. Your file name should be the title of your submission or some abbreviation of the title(s). The Subject line of your email should read: “AWP Genre: Last Name.” For example: “AWP Nonfiction: Dudek.”

DO NOT include your name or any personal identification on your submission file itself.

Please note that work previously published or under consideration for publication elsewhere is not eligible. Previous winners are also ineligible.

Year of the Creative Writer (YOCW) Events:

Next week, as part of the Year of the Creative Writer, the English Department’s Creative Writing Program, Humanities Research Institute, and The Urbana Free Library are hosting two readings by poet, Daniel Borzutzky and fiction writer, Christopher Grimes. These are Zoom events and will allow time for discussion with the authors after their readings.

Bailey Unpaid Internship Scholarship:

Are you interested in an unpaid internship but are concerned about the financial hardship it may cause? The Fred S. Bailey Unpaid Internship Scholarship Program offers academic scholarships to undergraduate students at the University of Illinois who will complete an unpaid internship with a public service agency or not-for-profit organization. Awards are $1,000 for a part-time internship or $2,500 for a full-time internship and are given directly to the student. All undergraduate students regardless of academic program or citizenship status are encouraged to apply. Weekly Round-Up

Everybody Eats @ Bevier Café:

Students can come and enjoy a meal at Bevier Café and “pay what they can.”  In addition, there is a jar as they come inside the service line with coupon cards that others have purchased to “pay it forward.”  They can grab a card and enjoy a free lunch or choose to pay what they can, whatever they are most comfortable with.  Bevier Café will continue to serve the same delicious menu, but with four distinct payment options.

  1. Pay the suggested price (menu price)
  2. Pay what you can (name your own price)
  3. Pay more (suggested price + a little extra)
  4. Pay it forward (buy a meal for someone else)

Daily mindfulness drop-in sessions:

Need a few minutes to find calm and focus? Check out the Counseling Center’s “Daily Mindfulness Drop-In Sessions.” Workshops are from 4:15 to 4:45 p.m.

The Diversity & Inclusion Networking Exchange (DINE):

The Diversity & Inclusion Networking Exchange (DINE) will be held on Wednesday, November 4, from 5-7PM, through Zoom. Students will have the opportunity to:

  • Connect with employers who value diversity and inclusion
  • Practice networking in a virtual setting
  • Hear what employers look for in new hires
  • Learn what questions they can ask to determine if an organization fits their needs

Illini Union Board invites you to participate in a short story contest. This is a great opportunity for you to share your creative talent and potentially win Illini Gear. Critical Language Scholarship Information Session:

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS), provided by the U.S. Department of State, is a fully-funded, intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for undergraduate and graduate students. The CLS institutes cover one academic year of university-level language coursework in eight to ten weeks over the summer, and include cultural programming, local language partners, and excursions. Free Flu Shots:

Free flu shots are now available to all Illinois students who have paid the Health Service Fee. A University of Illinois ID card must be presented at the time of service. Free events and food in the Memorial Stadium:

Every Friday and Saturday night (until Oct. 17) from 9pm-1am there are free events and food in the Memorial Stadium.

Friday Night is Movie Night!
A double feature movie, with free hotdog, popcorn, candy and drink (bottled water & hot chocolate).  You can bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks as well.  Also, bring blankets, pillows and make yourself comfortable.  $4 Beer and hard seltzers for purchase (21 and up with a valid ID).  Doors open at 8pm and first movie starts at 9pm.

The events are for students only and are hosted in Memorial Stadium to provide plenty of space for social distancing.  Bring a face covering, student ID and cellphone (to check your building access stadium on the Safer Illinois app).
