Leadership Center Undergraduate Professional Development Opportunities

I am reaching out with 2 professional development opportunities that will be provided by the Illinois Leadership Center this February, that we would love for you to share with your students…

Innovation- February 3, 10 am – 3:15 pm

Our Innovation i-Program, taking place on February 3rd , helps students understand how to efficiently work in team settings, refine their own problem-solving skills, understand how their own problem-solving skills may differ from others, and how to appreciate diversity of thinking. Students will be able to use these skills to create meaningful and positive impressions upon the organizations and people they work with. Innovation will take place in the Illini Union ABC rooms. Students will be provided with a fully catered lunch. Registration, found here, is open to all University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign students until January 20th.

Imprint- February 17 10 am- 4 pm

Our Imprint i-Program, taking place on February 17th, focuses on developing the leadership skills necessary during times of personal and professional transition. This program, only occurring once per academic year, is led by University of Illinois alumni from a variety of professions, academic colleges and graduating classes. During this program, Alumni will share stories of success and challenge during times of transition in their lives and students will learn how to develop, and maintain the personal and professional networks necessary to sustain success in any environment. Students will have designated time at this program to network with both their fellow students, as well as alumni. Imprint will take place in the Illini Union ABC rooms. Students will be provided with a full catered lunch. Registration, found here, is open to all University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign students until February 11th.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have!

Sincerely,

ENGL 109: Intro to Fiction – Advanced Comp and Lit&Arts GenEd

We’ve just added a new section of ENGL 109 (Intro to Fiction) to the spring schedule (all others are currently full). The focus of this particular section will be “Fictional Tech” (read on for a description), and this should appeal to students in a broad range of disciplines. This is an Advanced Composition course and a Lit & Arts Gen Ed.

ENGL 109: Intro to Fiction
The literary critic I.A. Richards famously described “the book” as “a machine to think with.” While we don’t always consider books as technologies, this course will consider the idea of “fictional tech” from two complementary angles. First, we will survey a range of fiction—historical and contemporary—that imagines, interprets, or interrogates the promise and peril of new media technologies. How can fiction expand our collective technological imagination, and what strategies does it offer for resistance? Second, we will explore the media technologies that have evolved in tandem with fictional genres—from the novel to video games—and consider how the media of fiction shapes its audience, reception, and cultural messages. How does the history of communications technology help us understand the evolution of fiction itself, and what might that history offer our interpretations of literature?

Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship for summer 2024

Undergraduate and graduate students studying less commonly taught languages (any language other than French, German, and Spanish) are encouraged to apply for a Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship for summer 2024 and/or academic year 2024-25. Applicants need to be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. To learn more, attend one of the upcoming info sessions. There will be a Zoom info session on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 4 P.M. (register here) and an in-person info session on Monday, Dec. 4 at 4 P.M. in Gregory Hall 205 (no registration required).

How much are the tuition support and stipend amounts?

  • Undergraduate academic year FLAS fellows receive $10,000 towards tuition and a $5,000 stipend.
  • Graduate academic year FLAS fellows receive a tuition waiver or $18,000 towards tuition (depending on the program) and a $20,000 stipend.
  • Summer FLAS fellows (both undergraduate and graduate) receive $5,000 towards tuition and fees and a $3,500 stipend.

What do I need to apply?

First, you will need to decide which language you would like to apply for. Please note that undergraduate applicants are required to have studied the language for at least one year by the time their fellowship period starts. For example, if you are currently taking first-year Arabic, you are eligible to apply now for a summer 2024 or academic-year 2024-25 FLAS to study second-year Arabic. Graduate students may apply for FLAS to study a language at the first-year level. The application requires a brief statement of purpose, two recommendation letters, and a transcript, in addition to an application form, which will be available starting Nov. 28.

When is the application due?

Applications are due Friday, January 26, 2024.

What is required from FLAS fellows?

Academic year FLAS fellows are required to be enrolled full-time and to take a language course and an area studies course each semester. Summer FLAS fellows are required to enroll in a language program that provides the equivalent of one year of language study.

Can I use FLAS to study abroad?

Yes!
