Teaching

I have been privileged to work with a large number of great students in courses ranging from large undergraduate surveys to focused seminars touching on many aspects of the musical experience. I particularly enjoy creating courses that cross the boundaries between historical, ethnographic, and empirical musicology.

Some recent seminars have included:

  • Performance without the Page: Musical Memory and Improvisation in the Middle Ages
  • Medieval Music and the End of the World
  • Not Just for Listening: The Performing Arts and Public Health in Africa
  • Music and Natural Philosophy on the Eve of the Scientific Revolution.

At Illinois I also supervise individual undergraduate and postgraduate musicology theses, particularly those pertaining to music written before AD 1750, or those wishing to engage with the natural sciences. If these domains sound interesting to you and you’d like to discuss the possibility of studying further, please send me an email!
