Performance

I have a passion for choral singing, especially consort singing (i.e. singing one per voice part), and for the past 15 years have been a part of numerous consorts and chamber choirs primarily performing music of medieval and renaissance Europe, or contemporary music written by composers inspired by aspects of this earlier repertoire.

For 10 years I was the bass/baritone of the ensemble Uncloistered, a 5-member consort that I co-founded that sang throughout the US and UK, and which I credit with teaching me much of what I know about ensemble singing. We recorded an EP in the Chapterhouse of the York Minster, from which feel free to listen to some tracks below.

Here is Nicolas’ Gombert’s “Veni dilecte mea/Sancta Maria”:

And Robert Whyte’s bass-tacular “Christe qui lux es et dies III”:

I also have sung on recordings of the Ebor Singers and with Gerard Presencer, available on the Boreas, Basho, and NMC record labels.

Outside of choral singing, my other great interest is in north Indian (Hindustani) classical music, and in particular the tabla. This interest ignited through a chance encounter with Pandit Divyang Vakil and the members of the ensemble Tālavya in 2010, and has burned brightly ever since. Pursuing this passion has taken me to India several times, as well to concerts as close as Urbana and as far afield as Zanzibar.
