Clair Patterson was born June 2, 1922, in Mitchellville, Iowa.  In his undergraduate career, he studied chemistry and graduated from Grinnell College in Iowa.  He then went on to graduate school at the University of Chicago and later to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).  This is where he would begin his long study to discover the age of the Earth, and his fight to stop lead pollution.
