Safety Week Begins!

Welcome to Safety Week 2018, sponsored by the Department of Chemistry Graduate Student Action Committee (DCGSAC) and the Chemistry Joint Safety Team (JST)! The activities get rolling tomorrow with events in both the morning and afternoon. See below for the full week’s schedule.


Tuesday morning, May 15th, 8:00 am-12:00 pm in CLSL-A Atrium: DCGSAC’s Suggest and Digest

  • Come grab a snack and coffee and share suggestions of how we can make the Chemistry department better!
  • DCGSAC reps will be available to have confidential meetings with students

Tuesday afternoon, May 15th, 1:00-2:00 pm in RAL 116: Division of Research Safety Behind the Scenes: Who We Are & What Happens to Your Waste After it leaves Lab!?

  • A discussion with Stephanie Hess, Assistant Director, DRS & Brian Meschewski, Research Safety Professional, DRS about DRS contacts for chemistry and waste disposal

Wednesday, May 16th, 4:00-5:00 pm in RAL 116: Safety in Industry at Dow Chemical

  • An overview of Dow safety programs and collaborations with universities with Irv Potts, Dow EH&S Leader in R&D

Thursday, May 17th, 1:00-2:00 pm in RAL 116: Graduate Student Leadership in Laboratory Safety

  • An abbreviated seminar from ACS NOLA with Kali Serrano, PhD Candidate, Braun Group, UIUC

Friday, May 18th: 4:30-6:00, between RAL and CLSL-B: Safety BBQ and Fire Extinguisher Training

  • Review proper fire extinguisher technique with the Urbana Fire Department starting at 4:30 and hang out for grilled goodies from DCGSAC starting at 5:00
