Tara Hatfield is a graduate student in Musicology. Her research focuses on hip-hop, reggae, and dancehall in Arusha, Tanzania and the communities centered around these musics. She is particularly interested in the roles these communities and this music play in environmental and educational advocacy and activism. She is studying Swahili in order to further this research in Tanzania and build lasting relationships with the musicians who reside in the area. In addition to research in Tanzania, she also hopes to conduct further research on Balinese gamelan and is currently studying Indonesian language as well.
