Managing Organizations

This course is part of the Strategic Leadership and Management Specialization.

Course Description

The main objective of this course is to introduce the basic concepts, frameworks, and tools necessary for understanding, designing, and leading today’s organizations. The course emphasizes those aspects of organizations that produce the necessary organizational capital such as their structures, history, human resource practices, and decision making processes and how managers use this capital to create value. The course is built around four fundamental questions about designing and managing organizations:

– How do managers create value through their organizations?
– What is the relationship between managers and their constituencies in governing the organization?
– What are some of the basic contingencies and principles of designing the overall structure of the organization?
– How should managers design the coordination, control, and performance measurement systems to effectively manage their critical resources that can lead to successful implementation of their business strategies?
