Personal Essay Reflection

Going back to our first major assignment certainly brought back a feeling of nostalgia; I really could not believe how far we have come and how fast everything went! In addition, it really made me realize the improvements that I have made as a writer just in this class alone. While I was mostly satisfied with the paper I submitted way back in Unit 1, there was certainly a lot that I was itching to revise.

As with most revisions, I started with the technical stuff. Things such as expletive constructions (which you will see is a very common thing I have been finding in revision…) were taken care of to the best of my ability. Then I headed over to sentence structure. Reading the paper aloud to myself, I decided what was okay and what needed to be re-worked; I tried to do this in such a way that would not change the original message of my paper, but more so improve it.

The biggest revision definitely came in the third body paragraph, as I realized there was a lot more that I could have explained to strengthen my argument! While I referenced the importance of Hawthorne’s narration in “The Minister’s Black Veil,” I realized that I gave no examples of its impact! Inserting a couple of direct quotes made my argument much stronger. And any opportunity to throw in more of Hawthorne’s silky-smooth prose is a plus!

Overall, I am very happy with how this paper was originally submitted but am also glad that I was able to make it even better. I thoroughly enjoyed how this paper was unique for everyone; allowing my classmates and I the opportunity to share our journey through writing was a lot of fun, and brought back a lot of memories.
