Ways To Practice Self-Care

Practicing self-care and self-love doesn’t have to be in vain. We all deserve to treat ourselves with kindness and love so our sense of confidence and strength is protected. With all the criticism and negative thoughts that cross our mind throughout the day, taking time to implement health habits is essential. Many experts have recently shared their own self-care pointers for everything from sleeping better to spending time with the right people. Whether they suit you to follow every day or try out every few weeks, it will help you feel better in the long run. Some great ways to practice self-care include:

  • Drinking plenty of water. If you feel extremely thirsty during certain times of the day, you’re already showing signs of being dehydrated. Make sure you drink clean and filtered water from the time you wake up to the time you go to sleep. Most doctors recommend at least eight glasses of eight ounce servings of water. This ensures that your system runs well, your mental clarity is strong, and your energy stays persistent so you can tackle your day. Substituting plain water with flavor drops or green tea also works to get in your daily servings of moisture.
  • Write down five things you are thankful for. It could be anything from having all your limbs, finding a five dollar bill in your pocket, our being in a great relationship with someone. The choice is yours to start the in a position of gratitude and positivity. It’s crazy how much that shift in thinking can make an impact on how we see life and interact with people from then on. Buy a small notepad or invest in a daily journal and get to writing! You can even get journaling apps these days to keep a list what you’re most thankful for in your life today.
  • Eat healthy foods. You don’t have to be a total health nut and eat only veggies to be considered healthy. Most experts recommend following the 80/20 rule, which consists of 80% health and organic foods that come from nature. The remaining 20% can be allocated to your favorite treats to indulge with in moderation. Sticking to organic, less processed, and nutrient choices are great. An example of a well-rounded meal could be a side of salmon, a few slices of avocado, brown rice, and a drizzle of low sodium teriyaki sauce. The choices are limitless at this point!
  • Practice self-love affirmations. Telling yourself kind words seems like cliche thing to do, like saying “I love myself” over and over again. It sounds a bit vain and frivolous when you first consider the idea. Think about it like this: switch negative thoughts in sticky situations to yourself like “I suck, I can’t do this” to “I am strong, I can solve this” can make a world of a difference. Self-care is all about treating yourself like you would want others to treat you. We are our worst critic and we all deserve a little more love throughout our busy days.
  • Getting at least half an hour of movement every day. If you live a sedentary lifestyle, it’s time to get of the couch. Even people in full time careers can find enough time to work out because they set their health as a priority. Self-care includes living an active lifestyle. Go to your local gym and try out a new workout regime to get your heart pumping and your body to release a healthy dose of endorphins. Take your workout outside and run in a nearby park trail or hike a local site with your dog. If you don’t have access to a gym, look up some home workout ideas on YouTube that you can squeeze in when there’s free time. The opportunities are endless when you get creative about moving around when you can.
  • Meditatingfirst thing in the morning. Or any time of the day before you start to have tasks piled up on your plate. Meditation can help reduce our blood pressure as well as symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, high stress, depression, and even lack of focus. It’s a skill definitely worth practicing and anyone can do it on their own time.
