I am currently an undergraduate researcher in Dr. Cadwallader’s flavor chemistry lab and have worked at the FSHN Pilot Processing Plant, where I help in processing products for clients and dining hall items. In addition to these experiences, I am an ACES Johnathan Baldwin Turner Scholar, as well as a UIUC Chancellor’s Scholar. I love to crochet, sew, bake, cook, and dance with my campus dance team, Dance2XS UIUC, in my free time!

Tyler Pham – Vice President for College Bowl – tjpham2@illinois.edu

Hi y’all! My name is Tyler Pham, and I’m a Junior in Food Science as well as your fearless VP for College Bowl. I started here at UIUC as a major in Biochemistry with a minor in Food Science, but fell in love with the program Food Science offered and the community I found through AFT. I love learning about everything Food Science related from product development to fermentation to flavor chemistry to food marketing. I currently work at the FSHN Pilot Processing Plant where I get hands-on experience in food processing and packaging to support clients in research and industry, and later this year, will be joining PepsiCo as a Product and Development Intern working with beverages in New York. Through college bowl, I get to use my love for learning in a more competitive environment alongside building relationships with both my teammates and with fellow food science students across the country. Beyond AFT, I love cooking and baking for my friends, video games, going to concerts, and collecting vinyls.

Katie Hsiao – Treasurer – katie4@illinois.edu

Hello everybody! My name is Katie Hsiao, and I’m a junior majoring in Food Science. This is my first semester being on the executive board for AFT, and I’m thrilled to be given this opportunity to work alongside my board and my committee. Even though I transferred into Food Science my Sophomore year, the warm welcome the food science community here at UIUC gave me inspired me to get more involved. My goals for being an officer is to give that warm welcome to incoming Food Science students as well as plan profitable fundraisers. This semester I’m taking part in Dr. Ozturk’s lab where we are focusing on how to utilize food byproducts by finding methods to turn what’s usually waste into egg/milk replacements. I like to try new foods, cafes, and go to the gym in my free time!

Jo Klancir – Secretary – jxk2@illinois.edu

Hello! My name is Jo Klancir, and I’m a sophomore in food science. I am interested in flavors and product development, specifically for snacks and confectioneries. This summer I participated in the Future Foodies program hosted by Conagra Brands. I hope to take the skills given to me in AFT into my academics and future career. Outside of school, I enjoy cooking, painting, traveling, and general arts and crafts like rainbow loom and perler beads!

Lauren Smilie – Social Media Chair – lsmilie2@illinois.edu

Hello! I’m Lauren Smilie, a sophomore at UIUC majoring in Food Science with minors in Horticulture and French. Growing up, I discovered my love for both food and science, so finding food science as a major felt like the perfect fit! My main interests are food microbiology and flavor chemistry, and I especially enjoy exploring how nutrition, creativity, and delicious recipes come together in this field. This past summer, I studied abroad in Thailand, focusing on the country’s major cash crops and interning with Siamaya Chocolate, where I explored cacao from tree to bar and experimented with flavor profiling and recipe development. Outside of academics, I enjoy traveling, music, and taekwondo, and I’m excited to serve as the social media chair for AFT to help create fun and meaningful experiences for our members!

Hello, my name is Kathleen Polli! I’m a junior majoring in Food Science at UIUC. I’m excited for my first semester as a fundraising admin. I plan on going into product development after graduation.
