The Korean Peninsula in Crisis?
On March 28, 2019 the Program in Arms Control & Domestic and International Security (ACDIS) and the Center for East Asian and Pacifix Studies (CEAPS) hosted The Korean Peninsula in Crisis? symposium. The sypmposium featured a variety of speakers from around the world who are respected and distinguished individuals in their respective fields.

Shifting Iran-US Relations
On September 29, 2017 the Program in Arms Control & Domestic and International Security (ACDIS) and the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (CSAMES) hosted the symposium, “Shifting Iran-US Relations: Return to Status Quo Ante or New Alignments in the Middle East Region?” Speakers included Asef Bayat, Shireen Hunter, Kevan Harris, Frederick Lamb, Matthias Grosse Perdekamp, and Trita Parsi, Founder and President of the National Iranian American Council, who gave the the keynote speech.

The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II:
The Massacre of Nanjing
ACDIS hosted a symposium recalling the history of the Sino-Japanese war and honoring Vautrin on December 16, 2017. On the 80th anniversary of the fall of Nanjing (Nanking), the symposium recalled the mass atrocities committed in the then Chinese capital by the Japanese Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War, through the journal entries of Illinois alumna Minnie Vautrin and the book “The Rape of Nanking” by alumna Iris Chang (Illinois Class of 1989). The speakers include scholarly experts on the massacre as well as the parents of Iris Chang.

Transatlantic Security
Partnering with the European Union Center, ACDIS organizes half-day symposiums about transatlantic security issues. The symposiums include research and presentations by scholars and policymakers from the university community. Previous topics have ranged from the status of national European armies to the role of Turkey to addressing challenges from weapons of mass destruction.
