Our last general meeting of the semester talked about advatages of being a UIUC and HQ AREMA member. Also we discussed a tenative schedule for the 2017 AREMA Conference in Indianapolis, IN with Railway Interchange! This general meeting also consisted of a “Effective Networking Panel” to help our members get ready for the AREMA COnference in September! Panelists were our former AREMA UIUC Presidents Sam Chadwick and Scott Schmidt. They were able to give us good advices about networking in the railroad industry. For our third general meeting, we welcomed Tony Gouveia from HNTB to talk about “A Career in Railroad Engineering”. He was able to give us a background of HNTB and also several of the projects his office in Boston worked on.
His presentation included the following projects:
Wellington and Cabot Yard (Boston)
Amtrak High Speed Rail Interlocking
South Coast Rail Project

3/1/17 – Field Visit – CN Kirk Yard in Gary, IN

Thank you CN for organizing our field trip to CN Kirk Yard in Gary, IN. We had a blast see the hump yard from the tower and learn CN’s history!

2/16/17 – General Meeting – Chris Murphy, Belt Railway of Chicago – Transforming the Belt Railway of Chicago with Innovative Infrastructure

We welcomed Chris Murphy from Belt Railway of Chicago to our second general meeting of the year. The presentation titled “Transforming the Belt Railway of Chicago with Innovative Infrastructure” informed about us about their exciting PTC projects.

1/26/17 – General Meeting – Tyler Dick – Making Money by Design: the Business of Engineering Consultants through the Lens of Railroad Projects


We welcomed our very own AREMA UIUC advisor, Tyler Dick, to talk about his experiences working for a consulting.  He presented “Making Money by Design: the Business of Engineering Consultants through the Lens of Railroad Projects”, where he described how the consultants in the railroad industry designed railroad projects.  Additionally he covered about how to negotiate your job offers and difference between Class I and consulting.  We had a great turnout and with many questions from our members!
