Q: How do I apply to be in AFROTC?

A: There is no application to be in AFROTC! You just register for the AFROTC courses like any other college course (AFAS 111 & AFAS 102).

Q: What scholarships or financial aid opportunities are available for cadets?

A: There are scholarships and tuition waivers available for those who qualify. If a high school senior, you can apply for a 4 year scholarship through AFROTC.com/scholarships. For other opportunities, visit our website (publish.Illinois.edu/afrotc). You do not need to apply or be awarded a scholarship to be in AFROTC.

Q: What does a typical week look like in AFROTC:

A: You can expect to spend 6-7 hours a weekend dedicated to AFROTC. This includes physical training, leadership lab, and lecture. There are other non-mandatory opportunities to be more involved in the program.

Q: What careers are available after graduation?

A: While in AFROTC, you are trained to be a leader and a manager no matter what career field you go into. Just about any career you can think within the private sector exists in some form in the Air Force. With that said, you make a commitment to serve before knowing what career field you will be commissioning into.

Q: What major qualifies for AFROTC?

A: There is no major requirement to be in AFROTC, study whatever you are passionate about.

Q: Is there a service commitment to join AFROTC? How long is the service commitment after commissioning?

A: There is no service commitment when initially joining AFROTC. You can drop the program anytime for any reason up to the spring of your sophomore year. Should you be selected to continue the program after sophomore year, the service commitment is 4 years after graduation, if selected for pilot, your commitment is 10 years.

Q: Are there any summer obligations while in AFROTC?

A: The only mandatory summer obligation is Field Training, which is a 3 week leadership training and evaluation event at Maxwell AFB in Alabama which takes place in the summer after Sophomore year. There are internship (some are paid!) and other experiential opportunities that you can apply for as a cadet, none of which are mandatory.
