Health in Africa and the Post-2015 Millennium Development Goals

CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT

CALL FOR PAPERS
Theme of the Conference “Health in Africa and the Post-2015 Millennium Development Goals”
Issue Co-Editors: Juliet Iwelunmor (PhD), Ezekiel Kalipeni (PhD), & Diana Grigsby-Toussaint (PhD)

Scope

By the year 2015, the eight Millennium Development Goals set 14 years ago will be up for renewal and remodeling. Many decisions will be made in the next year, including the development of new health-related Millennium Development Goals and related targets and indicators for the post 2015 development agenda, yet there remains unfinished business in the health MDGs in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), with new emerging health priorities accorded the dual burden of infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

The scale of the challenge posed demands an extraordinary response hence the need to bring together a leading and interdisciplinary group of researchers to discuss these issues and advance recommendations for the “Post-2015 Development Agenda.”

The Office of International Programs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites researchers to submit manuscripts for consideration in a symposium entitled “Health in Africa and the Post Millennium Development Goals.” Manuscripts are invited in the following areas:
1. The dual burden of diseases (communicable and non-communicable diseases) in SSA
2. Addressing the challenges and opportunities with improving health in SSA, including ethical issues
3. Addressing gender-related issues and health including topics on maternal and child health, and men’s health
4. Addressing health and aging across the life course (with reference to adolescent, young adult, adult, and older population).
5. Addressing health systems roles, including physical resources, human resources, intellectual resources, health systems financing, governance, and service delivery with reference to Africa
6.. Understanding the successes and failures in the implementation of health related Millennium Development Goals over the past decade through case studies
7. Understanding and charting the future for health in Africa in light of the impending “Post-2015 Development Agenda” (with reference to sustainability, partnership and participation)
8. Recommendations, and future directions

Submission of Abstract and Manuscripts

Articles for publication may be either from an academic or practitioner perspective, but must contribute to the general public discourse and the scholarly community. Interested authors should submit an abstract of no more than 300 words by November 7, 2014 to the following email address: africa2015mdgconf@gmail.com. Abstract proposals should include the author’s name, address, telephone number, email address, and institutional affiliation. Please submit electronic versions of the abstracts as an e-mail attachment. The conference organizers will review the abstracts and respond to the authors of the suitability of submitting a full-length paper for the special issue. Selected papers will be published in special issues of two prominent global health journals, namely, Global Public Health (Columbia University) and Journal of Global Health (Edinburgh University). Papers will be peer-reviewed following the policies of these two journals. Only electronic submissions will be accepted. Submissions must be formatted in Microsoft Word. The documentation and stylistic standards of each article will have to conform to the requirements of the two journals. The deadline for full-length papers is February 15, 2015 and the symposium at which the papers will be presented will take place on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on May 20-22, 2015.

Best Regards,
